Having a cigarette with your coffee has been a trend for a long time. People take cigarettes to treat their nerves and coffee helps you stay awake. The truth is that coffee and cigarettes together can do damage to your heart as you are dealing with two stimulants.
Coffee is a stimulant that enhances awareness and makes you more energized. According to the National Coffee Association, 83% of Americans drink coffee everyday. It is said that people tend to drink an average of three cups of coffee a day which is 587 million cups of coffee being drank a year. Coffee can be good for your liver as well as reducing the chances of Alzheimer’s, dementia, stroke, and cancer. There are also consequences of drinking too much coffee such as dehydration and insomnia. Cigarettes may seem to be a dependence to those who need a stress reliever as they can bring a euphoric feeling of relaxation but only harm comes from cigarettes. Once you inhale a cigarette, 7,000 chemicals are released with 69 of them causing cancer. Because the effects of smoking are only temporary, people tend to smoke every few hours.
When you combine coffee with cigarettes, coffee will increase blood flow and cigarettes will be restricting against arteries. One thing this combination does is develop a plaque in arteries which makes them rigid and helps lose its elasticity. When the arteries get narrow, that results in high blood pressure which will increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The heart will feel forced to work harder to meet the body’s requirement of oxygenated blood.
In reality, no one should be smoking but if you feel the need to smoke, it is best to avoid coffee when doing it and vice versa. Coffee should be taken in moderation to reduce the harmful risks. When drinking a cup of coffee, you can substitute the cigarette with a crunchy vegetable or another kind of food. Instead of coffee, you can drink green tea while having your cigarette since green tea has antioxidants and nutrients and increases brain power. There are also ways to quit smoking like nicotine gum or a nicotine patch as well as avoiding the smoking section when you are at a restaurant. Coffee and cigarettes come with their bad consequences with the body separately so putting them together will cause even more damage to the body.
